Kathiresan and Indira have two daughters. The eldest daughter Ilavarase is the heroine of this plot and works in a private firm. Ilavarase has a lot of affection on her father. The younger one Leela is a college student and the Kathiresan's lead a very happy life in spite of the meager income that they have. Kathiresan gets his daughter engaged to Karthik who is the son of Ramasubbu of the same town. Karthik happens to be a selfish person who wishes to make a fast buck through crooked means and he already has a relationship with Kavitha. Karthik makes use of the situation and swindles the money and jewels from Kathiresan in a tricky manner.

Saravana Perumal has three sons. Arumugam the eldest one is a jobless drunkard who has a wife Janaki and daughter Shamli. Subramani the protagonist is Saravana Perumal's second son. Subramani takes care of the family responsibly and runs a small business supplying snacks to many shops. The third son Shanmugam is undergoing training as a sub inspector. Though Shakthivel becomes a sub inspector with the help of his elder brother Saravana Perumal he totally ignores his elder brother's family after marrying Rajalakshmi a greedy woman. Shakthivel's son Chezhiyan happens to be a nice person and helps his uncle's family in many ways. His sister Nirmala is a student. Saravana Perumal vows to make his son Shanmugam as a sub inspector only because of the anger he has on his brother Shakthivel. Due to the family circumstances Shanmugam takes up a part time job as a driver in a logistics company.

Kathiresan happens to be run over by the van driven by Shanmugam in an accident and Subramani comes forward to take the blame on him so that the prospects of his younger brother to become a sub inspector would not be spoilt. Ilavarase's wedding is stopped because of her father's death and she starts hating Subramani for being the cause of her father's death. Ilavarase starts working again but her mother insists that she get married and Ilavarase agrees to get married. Subramani tries to help Ilavarase's family as they have been affected because of his brother but Ilavarase insults him and sends him away. Janaki's sister Kayalvizhi falls in love with Subramani and though Subramani does not love her he agrees to marry her after the wedding of Ilavarase is over. On the day of the wedding Karthik gets arrested by the police on case of cheating and Ilavarase's wedding is stalled again. Ilavarase's mother starts wailing and Subramani happens to tie the knot around Ilavarase's neck since no one else comes forward to marry her. Ilavarase is stunned at this and tries to discard the mangalsutra but her mother stops her from doing so. Ilavarase is forced to accept the person she hates as her husband. Kayalvizhi who was waiting to get married to Subramani consumes poison.

At her in law's place Ilavarase sheds hatred on everyone and refuses to even speak to them. Kayalvizhi who has been saved from the crutches of death joins hands with Karthik vowing to get married to Subramani. At one stage Ilavarase picks up a fight with Subramani quits the house and goes to her mother's house. Ilavarase befriends Raja the house owner and her mother starts suspecting their relationship. Indira is furious at Ilavarase and joins and ashram as an inmate. To appease her mother Ilavarase joins her in laws only to learn that Subramani has a secret relationship with his sister in law Janaki. Ilavarase is unaware that it was a plot hatched by none other than Kayalvizhi and Karthik and she quits her in laws to go back to her mother's house.

In the course of time Ilavarase realizes the truth and returns to her husband's house but she is unable to live a matrimonial life with her husband Subramani as she still feels that he is the cause for her father's death. She asks for some time to accept Subramani as her husband and he too agrees to it. Kayalvizhi who still yearns to get Subramani marries his brother Shanmugam and enters the household.

Krishna a co student of Leela wishes to bed her and she too gets trapped without realizing that he is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Kavitha the paramour of Karthik dumps him, gets married to Sivakumar and accepts his daughter as her own. Ramasubbu too joins her and Karthik waits to avenge on her.

Arumugam gets trapped in a murder case and is forced to live undercover. He visits his house without anyone's knowledge as a result of which Janaki becomes pregnant again and this becomes a big problem.

Philomena the daughter of Chezhiyan's uncle Francis and his wife Shyamala is an arrogant woman who becomes addicted to drugs. Out of her greed for money Rajalakshmi gets Philomena married to Chezhiyan.
