Thalaimagan is Sarathkumar’s 100th film.

Sarathkumar performs the role of Dheeran, a phenomenal journalist who possesses the qualities of social responsibility, having an outlook beyond generations, precautious about what’s happening around him, courageous, bold and daring in protesting against injustice with presence of mind and investigative capacity. He is dutiful and non-corrupt. Mekala (Nayanthara) joins as a fresh journalist and Erimalai (Vadivelu) is another journalist. The daily in the name of ‘Everest’ is run by Sathyamurthy (Vijayakumar).

‘Everest’ reveals the news in fact and thus generates an impact among the people. The daily’s in-depth investigative journalism gets into the roots of mal-activities of politicians and other power holders.

Right from a homemaker to a constable, aware of Dheeran’s mobile number, contacts him for information and timely assistance in case of emergency. Dheeran responds to their calls with verve and tough hand. Shanmuga Vadivel, (Mukesh Tiwari) a minister indulges into various dishonest activities assisted by a police officer (Seema Biswas) with thugs to take orders. The minister grants permission to establish a mineral water firm in a village known as Nedunkulam after accepting a bribe of Rs.3 crores.

Dheeran reveals the fact that this mineral water unit would spoil the atmosphere and that the land around the area will become futile. Provoked by this, the criminals retaliate and in the melee, editor of the daily, Sathyamurthy, gets killed by the thugs. Dheeran takes up the daily and becomes the editor. He renames the daily as ‘New Everest’ and intensifies his investigative journalist activities under disguise and brings out the atrocities of the minister to light.

Minister plans to eliminate Dheeran but Dheeran escapes the conspiracy.

The rest of the storyline weaves around the vigorous efforts of Dheeran to bring the minister and the police officer into the folds of law.
